FIR Videos: PR Disasters - December 24, 2009

Using VodBurner, we have produced our first FIR video, a Skype call between FIR’s co-hosts. We’ll work on improving the quality, adding visuals and the like, as time goes on, but for our first effort on Christmas Eve, we opted to just use the VodBurner output as is. We’ll also look at adding these videos to the “everything” RSS feed but, for now, we’re just embedding it here. We’re anxious to hear what you think!

  1. Thank you for the holiday gift Santa(s). ;-) Very nice quality & enjoyed the double box/single views of each of you: Kudos to the Director. Nicely done!

  2. Good to see you trying video and VODburner out. I certainly works from the viewers side. Clear image and reasonable audio syncing.

I feel that ‘how to apply it’ is the question. When the show has visual content over and above Neville & Shel then showing that content would be valuable.

When it is just you two then I am not so sure, not that it is not nice to see you both, but the smaller audio only file is more useful to me.

One example that comes to my mind is ‘Cranky Geeks’ although seeing the talking heads is interesting the video adds little to the show, where as ‘Tekzilla’ really uses the image capacity.

Just my quick thoughts, best wishes for the holidays to you both, MikeTheBee.

  3. Hi Shel and Neville,

As Mike pointed out, the video worked from the viewers side in terms of clear image and good audio quality. Interesting to see you both, and it adds an additional element to the presentation.

I tend to listen to the podcasts I subscribe to via my iPod, although if were listening through my computer, seeing the two of you is much better than watching those computer generated coloured patterns that would normally appear on my screen - not sure how to describe them, but I find they take away from what I am listening to and are distracting.

  4. Hi, Shel and Neville -

Really enjoyed your Vodcast. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Shel several times, but I’ve never met Neville in person, so it was neat to get a better sense of you as a person—gives me a stronger mental image to go along with the podcasts.

I’d think the usage would be when you have something physical to show—Web sites, a video clip, a quick demo—of something that the two of you want to discuss. That’ll make the discussion much richer for viewers.

Once you get the hang of it, you can do an FIR live “Brady Bunch” style, with speakers all talking in their boxes and callers having the option to pop into an empty box to ask questions.
